Course Description
The Elevator and Other Conveyances Continuing Education Course is an 8-hour New York State Department of Labor-approved continuing education course designed for New York State elevator licensees who are required to complete continuing education for license renewal.
The course provides continuing education on current elevator and conveyance codes and standards, elevator technology and technical principles, and workplace safety. Instruction includes discussion of applicable ASME standards, New York State and local code requirements, elevator equipment and terminology, mechanical and hydraulic principles, electrical and construction principles, emerging elevator technologies, and industry safety practices.
The course consists of the following three required curriculum areas:
New and Existing National, State and Local Conveyance Codes and Standards – 3 Hours
Topics include:
- ASME A17.1, A17.2, A17.3, A18.1 and QEI-1 standards
- New York State Building, Fire, Electrical and Accessibility Codes
- Applicable local city and county elevator/conveyance requirements
- Professional ethics and conduct
- New York State Labor Law Article 33
- NYS Department of Labor elevator licensing guidance and requirements
Technology and Technical Education – 3 Hours
Topics include:
- Elevator and conveyance equipment and terminology
- New and emerging elevator hardware and software technologies
- Mechanical principles
- Hydraulic elevator principles
- Electrical circuitry and controls
- Elevator construction principles
- Elevator and conveyance architectural drawings
- Existing and emerging technologies affecting elevator operation and safety
Elevator/Conveyance Workplace Safety – 2 Hours
Topics include:
- Elevator Industry Field Employees’ Safety Handbook
- OSHA elevator and escalator safety requirements
- Hazard recognition and safe work practices
- Construction and installation hazards
- Inspection and testing hazards
- Maintenance, alteration, service and repair hazards
- Case studies and instructor-led safety discussions
Who Should Attend?
This course is intended for New York State elevator licensees who are required to complete NYS Department of Labor-approved continuing education, including eligible:
- Elevator Mechanics
- Accessibility Lift Technicians
- Elevator Inspectors
Participants should verify their individual continuing education requirements with the New York State Department of Labor.
NYS Continuing Education Requirements
New York State elevator licenses are issued for two-year periods. Licensees who are subject to continuing education requirements must complete approved continuing education in accordance with NYS Department of Labor requirements.
This course provides 8 contact hours (0.8 CEU) of NYS DOL-approved Elevator and Other Conveyances Continuing Education.
Online Course Requirements
This is a live, instructor-led online course. Participants must attend and participate for the entire required training period.
Students will be required to provide appropriate identification and their Department of Motor Vehicles identification number (DMV ID) in accordance with NYS Department of Labor requirements.
A Certificate of Completion will be issued to students who successfully satisfy all course attendance, identification and participation requirements.
